Thyroid and Adrenal Gland Dysfunction

What Are Thyroid Gland Disorders and Symptoms.

The thyroid gland manufactures hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism. Several different disorders can arise when your thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). The thyroid gland is responsible for the function of many systems in our body including our metabolism (body weight), digestive functions, muscle functions, brain functions, bone density health, menstrual cycles, body temperature and cholesterol levels.

What is Hypothyroidism and How To Recognize Symptoms

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of certain important hormones.

Hypothyroidism disrupts the normal balance of chemical reactions in your body. It rarely causes symptoms in the early stages; but over time, untreated hypothyroidism will cause a great deal of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease. Women, especially those older than age 60, are more likely to have hypothyroidism. The good news is that Infusion Health TeleMedicine Clinic offers accurate thyroid function tests available to diagnose hypothyroidism.

What is Hyperthyroidism and How To Recognize Symptoms

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine.

Hyperthyroidism can accelerate your body’s metabolism significantly, causing sudden weight loss, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating, and nervousness or irritability. Several treatment options are available if you have hyperthyroidism. Doctors use anti-thyroid medications and radioactive iodine to slow the production of thyroid hormones. Sometimes, treatment of hyperthyroidism involves surgery to remove all or part of your thyroid gland. Although hyperthyroidism can be serious if you ignore it, most people respond well once hyperthyroidism is diagnosed and treated.

Older adults are more likely to have either no signs or symptoms or subtle ones, such as an increased heart rate, heat intolerance and a tendency to become tired during ordinary activities. Medications called beta blockers – used to treat high blood pressure and other conditions, can mask many of the signs of hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism can mimic other health problems, which may make it difficult for your doctor to diagnose. It can also cause a wide variety of signs and symptoms, including two types of auto-immune thyroid diseases – Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Graves’ Disease.

What Are Adrenal Gland Disorders and Symptoms.

Adrenal gland sits on top of each kidney. The adrenal gland has three main functions. The production of cortisol, aldosterone, and male and female sex hormones. Cortisol helps you respond to stress and has many other important functions. With adrenal gland disorders, your glands make too much or not enough hormones. When dealing with adrenal dysfunction we primarily look to cortisol and the sex hormones. We try and find the balance between them and make sure we know which is the focal point.

What is Cortisol and What Role Does it Play

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands which sit on top of each kidney.

Cortisol is a hormone, which is mainly released at times of stress and has many important functions in your body. Having the right cortisol balance is essential for human health and you can have problems if your adrenal gland releases too much or too little cortisol. Cortisol is also needed for the fight or flight response which is a healthy, natural response to perceived threats.

The amount of cortisol produced is highly regulated by your body to ensure the balance is correct. Cortisol levels normally fluctuate throughout the day and night in a circadian rhythm that peaks at about 8 AM and reaches it lowest around 4 AM. When an imbalance occurs in this normal flow, fatigue, weight gain, hypertension and many other disorders can occur. Cortisol influences many vital functions of the body including:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Immune Responses
  • Anti-inflammatory Actions
  • Blood Sugar (Glucose) Levels
  • Central Nervous System Activation
  • Heart and Blood Vessel Tone and Contraction
  • Metabolism to Maintain Blood Glucose (Gluconeogenesis)

We are a team of experts

What starts the healing process is the relationship between doctor and patient.  Being connected with a doctor is lost in todays traditional medical model.  We cannot tell you how many people in our physical office love the fact that we take the time to listen to their concerns.  Being connected with the patient is the most important part of a relationship.  The patient having trust and confidence in our ability and then communicating in a way that builds the bond where we can work together to bring back or maintain proper health.  We both grow constantly within our philosophy of restoring health, we constantly learn to bring the latest in advanced techniques and testing.
